The Cadillac Aera concept vehicle won the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge, tying with Smart and besting entries from seven other automakers including Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Maybach. GM Advanced Design has now won the honor more times than any other design team; this is its third victory since 2005. Like other concepts of this year’s challenge, the Aera focus on weight. The concept is a an efficient four-passenger vehicle that maintained comfort, safety, driving performance and style while not exceeding the “1,000 lb. car” weight limit. Aeras body utilizes a 3D lattice, mono-formed frame that was designed to be similar to configurations found consistently in nature. We’re not referring to the gorgeous 911 GT3 that will form the basis of Porsches new racer but the two Formula 1 arch-rivals that launched their new hypercars at the Swiss show. Both boast outlandish horsepower figures in excess of 900HP, sub-3.0-second 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration times, a level of technology unseen until now in production cars and will be produced in limited numbers and, of course, priced accordingly. Honda has unveiled its 2012 Civic Si Concept at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, previewing the production versions of the popular small car and targeting a growing number of competitors with an aggressive new look and multiple engine choices. With a series of revamped elements at the exterior and improved interiors, the Honda Civic Si Sedan and Coupe Concepts features 19 inch alloys, and while he four-door model looks pretty much similar to the current generation Civic, the 2-door seams heavily inspired by the current Accord Coupe. Meanwhile, four-door buyers can expect an exterior design very similar to the 2011 Civic. Though the sedans front-fascia wears a little bit more menace than the current design, the carried-over grille and headlights are more than a little familiar. The refreshed 2014 Hyundai Equus debuted at the New York auto show on Wednesday. The flagship gets upgrades in almost every area, including the interior, exterior, chassis and technology. From the outside, we can see new 19-inch turbine-style wheels with a polished silver finish. The front grille bars are thinner, with sharper contrasts to the blacked-out portions. The front fascia now has lower air-inlet openings, while the headlights now offer a jeweled design. LED fog lamps are now standard. Inside, Hyundai redesigned the instrument panel and center stack, with new button iconography for easier feature recognition. The steering wheel has also been refreshed with new buttons and icons.
